This young bull was heading over to check out a couple apple trees just before dusk. Almost every day at this time you can see him and a couple of his friends making this same trip. On several occasions have seen 10 – 15 of them milling around there.

Why are elk called Wapiti? Once you understand the definition of Wapiti, this picture is all the explanation you will need to figure the rest out. Wapiti is a Shawnee word meaning “white rump” and as you can tell from the above pic, they definitely have a white rump.
Have you ever seen a nicer rump than this?

This is the first set of Triplets we have seen. They were so cute playing around in the road while mom was just off to the side grazing. Thank goodness this area is a low speed zone with limited traffic. When we passed they went back to mom and the group headed back down into the woods.

We took a picture of this huge bull Elk late one evening on our way back from DuBois. It was lounging in a yard in Bennezette Pa. This big guy had traffic backed up for quite some distance. In fact this is probably the largest (antler size) Bull we have seen in Benezette to date. From our best count this was an 13 X 11.
As avid fans of PA’s Elk population we decided to launch a PA Elk Herd fan site. Basically, we want to celebrate these amazing creatures by sharing them with the world. On this site we will have the following Elk related features.
- Photo’s of the Elk in their natural and sometimes not so natural surroundings.
- Herd updates.
- Elk locations and tips on safely and ethically catching a good glimpse of them.
- Discussions about issues regarding PA’s Elk herd and the issues that impact them.
- User submitted articles, photo’s, questions, comments and topical discussions.
We will be working over the coming weeks to get the site fully up and running, so please check back again. Also, if you would like to contribute we would love to hear from you.
