Pa Elk

My secret elk viewing spot!

September 12th, 2009

When you ask most Pa ElkĀ  pros they will tell you that going up on Winslow Hill in Benezette Pa is a great choice to see mature bull elk. What they don’t know is it is not the best place to go in Benezette. There is a little known location very close to Winslow Hill that few know about and even fewer take the time to visit. Ironically, it is way easier to locate elk there and many people drive right through it without ever knowing there are so many there.

Here are a couple of the elk I saw at my “secret spot” when there were none to be found on Winslow Hill.

Nice looking Bull Elk

This one was way off in the distance standing on the crest of a hill. It was hard to get a good picture because there were a lot of weeds between it and I, plus the bull would not stay still.

Bull Elk Hiding In The Tall Grass

I totally almost missed this one because the grass was so high and the brush was so thick. Getting a picture of this one was tough because there was only one opening in the brush between it and I and since I was using auto focus it kept focusing on the wrong depth. Finally, I put it on manual and as you can tell i did not do such a great job.

Twin Bull Elk

These two Bulls were out in the wide open browsing on grass and leaves. Their racks looked identical and they stuck really close to each other. There is no way to know for sure if they are related, but by the way they acted and their similar size, looks and age makes me wonder if they are. In either case they were great examples of what the young bull in Benezette look like and give hope that the future population will be carrying some sturdy racks and stout bodies.

The question you may be asking is where is this secret location? Well, I am not ready just yet to give it up, but in an upcoming post I will spill the beans on all of my secret spots in the Benezette area where you can go to check out elk and not have to fight the crowds.

Sorry to be a tease, but check keep checking back and I promise we will make it worth your while!

GREAT photos… We are headed up to Big Elk Lick campground to camp and do some horseback riding. Any suggestions on places to ride? I know the equestrian trail is there, but any other suggestions of areas to spot elk while on horseback?

  2.   Pa Elk Guide says:

Honestly, the best place to view elk are not the best places to ride horses due to all the vehicle traffic or the fact that they are on private property. The horse trails in the area do give you a solid chance of seeing elk, but the best elk viewing is done via car or on foot.

If anyone has some suggestions for Teresa please post them here!

    Hello,
We are coming to Elk County in a few days. We were wondering
if you could give us a few suggestions where some good spots
are to photograph elk, bear, and turkeys. This is our first time to come to Elk County.Your comments are appreciated.
    Thank you,

Benezette Pa is by far the east place to photograph Elk if you don’t have much time, plus you will also have a chance to see all animals you mentioned. Up on Winslow Hill the viewing area’s are good early morning and late evenings, with the viewing area that does not have the visitor center being the one I see more at.

Also, check out Gray Hill Rd, which is just off 555 before you get to the Benezette Store coming from I-80.
